I don’t know when I started using this approach of the narrator loosely interacting with the character in the image, but it has opened up a lot more possibilities. With static art of vehicles or buildings before this, I usually had to have dialogue coming from inside, and that was awkward because it was harder to know who was speaking.
This dynamic is the kind of thing which can only be done in a comic strip. I mean, who is the narrator here, and how is it that the people in the covered bridge are aware of him? Makes no sense, but somehow still works.
