This strip’s more topical than it seems because I had a dentist appointment today.
I actually wrote a flossing simulator once – part of a series of completely useless freeware games I put out in the mid-90′s under the name “Stupidsoft.” The series also included a clock-kicking game, a piano-avoiding game, a baseball simulator based on the 1994-95 season (i.e. an empty baseball diamond with cricket noises) and a game called “Lost in the Dark” in which your hero was against a black background and you were able to walk around, shrug, scratch your head, and look at a map, until at some random point “Oops, you died!” would pop up on the screen and your adventure would be at an end.
MRS. SHOEBOX’S ASSESSMENT OF TODAY’S STRIP: Amusing!
Have a great weekend, dammit!

I’d say that the advent of mobile devices with multi-touch screens make the time right for a relaunch of the flossing simulator.
I actually got it working on my Droid with DOSBox.
God, I’m obsessed with running old shit on new shit.

Now, this? This is the best strip in a long time, I think.
…By the way, isn’t it high time to move the two Bake Sale pages to some place a little less prominent in the navigation?
The Lost in the Dark death sounds like it beats getting eaten by a Grue by a country mile.
SO GREAT. I like that it made fun of the art too, but in a subtle way.. you look at the screen and go ‘oh THAT’s what it is’
i would love to see those games…. just the concepts sound awesome. i loled at the baseball one alone. and, goddammit, have a great weekend yourself!
I remember having an Atari 2600 party one time where someone had a big box of games, which thanks to the terrible quality control that ultimately did in the Atari included some crazy stuff. The best title on a cartridge was “Teeth Brush.”
Alas, the Teeth Brush cartridge was either broken or just not compatible with the Atari we had, so we could only dream what it would be like to play Teeth Brush. But the name lives on.
I wonder what the “default chunks” are for this edition?
Ptharien -
…Wow, I’d completely forgotten about that. Maybe if we’re really quiet, nobody else will notice.
-=’Box=-
a game about teeth that has “default chunks”… EWWWWWWWWW….
I would like to see those games. Can you just post them on the website?
@Ptharien: Thanks for the search terms – I suspected the same, but I didn’t try looking at first. And beyond that, I’ll keep just quiet on this subject.
@Jorpho: I think you mean “isn’t it high time we had a new contest?”
Thanks a lot ShoEboX, for bringing up unpleasant memories of the Captain Novolin game for the SNES.
Surprisingly, there are few game ideas that don’t go unpublished. We’ve had fishing games (too many to count, but Bass Fishing and River King stand out for me), farming simulators (Harvest Moon), Ant Farm simulators (SimAnt), Hide-and-Go-Seek (Sneak King), even crappy ATARI bartender games. If you can think it, someone’s probably played it!
