“Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.” - Douglas Adams.
I don’t know why so much of my clipart collection contains images of computers too outdated to support the media on which it resides. But sometimes this results in inspiration.
Originally I had an explanation for the box of floppy disks…namely that the dad brought them with him with the intent of accessing them with his son’s laptop. But explaining this made the strip too wordy and kinda screwed up the flow, so I dropped it and just let the disks sit there. Hopefully they’re not ruining the joke for anyone, and if they are, I hope the explanation here in the commentary is sufficient to repair it.
MRS. SHOEBOX’S ASSESSMENT OF TODAY’S STRIP: *Laughing* Yeah, you got me.
Recommended listening for this strip: Tom Smith’s “Tech Support For Dad.”

Um, it’s “vacuum.” One “c”, two “u”s.
Funny anyway, though…
I always screw up the spelling of “vacuum,” too.
Fixed! Thanks for the catch!
-=’Box=-
“Vacuum” is one of those words that’s easier to spell if you pronounce it in the British fashion–”VAC-you-um.” Of course, most Brits say “Hoover.”
At work someone posted a sign that spelled it, “vaccumme”. I’m having a hard time thinking of a worse way to mangle that word.
How about, oh, “vackoom” ?
I’ve just heard that Tom Smith song! He’s crazy fun live
Dammit, what about the sixty-nine other words in this strip that I spelled CORRECTLY? Don’t I get any credit for those? I mean, right next to “vakyume” there’s “tubes,” sitting gently in quiet dignity, every letter perfectly placed and exquisitely rendered in a jaunty Comic Sans for your amusement. Just look at it! Can’t we talk about my beautiful “tubes?”
-=’Box=-
Dude. I am so NOT talking about your beautiful tubes.
…And on the other side of “vacuum” from “tubes” is “litle”, which is, shall we say, too little (or is this too late?).
…oh, good lord.
So I screwed up two back-to-back words…and wrote an entire paragraph discussing ANOTHER adjoining word.
Time for a “Design A Failure Trophy For Shoebox” contest!
I’ll fix this tonight. Just…wow.
Nobody tell Rob about this, okay?

The great Steve Martin described the phenomenon like this:
“HEY, let’s try this NEW thing!”
{Sound of a door, being slammed} “Sorry, we’re closed now…”
Oh, and Hoover is also an FBI verb, as in “I just Hoovered the fingerprints from the door knob.”
I’m reading this on my Battleship game right now.
There’s still a box of floppies somewhere with my backed-up files on them.. ahh the memories..
Thing is though, I thought “apps” were just like, the knockoff version of programs used by non-computer phone-device things… Surely on a laptop he’d wanna access ‘programs’ but then if that makes him even more clueless it adds to the joke even better.. which, by the way, was great.
Well done for now keep up the good work.
If you can keep this strip here for a few more days, it would be a wicked Father’s Day present.
-=PakoPako=-
It would indeed. Alas, I have posted a new strip, thus continuing my long-standing tradition of posting comics that have absolutely nothing to do with current events or holidays.
