Zebras

I spent most of the night working on a completely different strip, but just couldn’t get it right.  This one’s been almost-finished and in my “emergency” bin for months, and my wife says it’s funny, so here it is.

I just got a new collection of clip art in the mail today!  I’ve barely checked it out, but can’t wait to truly dig in and see what creepy reptiles, melting phones, and uphill box races it has to offer!

Tigers live in China, Indonesia, and India. Zebras live in southern and eastern Africa.

Wow! New animal fact: Tigers will travel ridiculous distances for tasty zebra meat!

  2. Jorpho

All it needs is a crocodile reference, and it could be Pearls Before Swine.

  3. MG

Well it IS funny. We can mentally substitute Lions for Tigers, and… maybe “Chomp” or “Nibble” for CRUNCH. A little “Ow” could have been OK too. So, then, this is how Zebra cannibalism all began?

  4. Lenny

Well, I would expect zebras to taste like horses, and I hear horses taste like greasier beef, and I love me some burgers, so I say why not? Let’s try it!

@MuleyBob: Talking, sapient zebra have the same problem as another talking, sapient animal I’ve heard of. They live in some pretty stupid places, keep building inadequate houses in hurricane pathways and flood basins that wash out sometimes every single year and clearly also attempt to live where tigers live.

Nobody ever said that talking, sapient zebra were very smart. Kind’ve like that other talking, sapient animal. It’s name is right on the tip of my fingers, but it slips my mind.

Yeah, it actually occurred to me when I woke up this morning that I really should’ve researched what kind of animals actually DO eat zebras. Ah well. This is what happens when I don’t finish a strip ’til 1 in the morning. I’ll fix it tonight and change this comment to read “What are you talking about? It clearly says ‘lions!’” Hooray for abuse of power!

Oh, and I stand by “crunch.” The only zebras I’ve ever eaten were animal crackers, but I assure you that they do in fact crunch. And are delicious.

Thanks for sticking with me through this latest sleep deprivation experiment,

I’ve been laughing or chuckling at your last strips, they are getting funnier =).

  8. Dan

Your wife is right. That is hilarious. I forwarded it to a vegetarian friend and he laughed.

This sorta reminds me of that Robot Chicken sketch, in which a Jelly Bear steps into a trap. Doing what bears do, it decides to gnaw off its leg, which it starts doing with a grimace of pain. But the jelly bear discovers it is in fact delicious, and finishes the job with relish.

Only to step in another bear trap soon after.

the tiger thing makes for a great red herring, you think “is it going to be a ’stripes’ joke?” and then it’s .. hehehehe..
anyway tigers used to be all over africa. the lions chased them out. racists.

  11. MooseDrool

Lions and tigers and bears, Oh My!

  12. Efogoto

Of course they’re delicious! They’re made out of meat!

  13. Kel

Even better than a tiger or a lion would be a liger, a mix between a tiger and a lion. I hear they have great magic skills. (Citation from Napolean Dynamite.)

So is a cut of zebra alternating light/dark meat, or what?

  15. jjmblue7

    @ Kevin
If so, It would easily delineate for me which parts I want to eat from the ines I don’t. The chewy fat in the dark meat grosses me out to no end.

  16. Lenny

There is only one solution to the white meat/dark meat question. We must all chip in to buy and taste a zebra from the zoo. How much does a zebra cost? Anybody?

  17. shoebox

Y’know, Rob did a lot of amazing things with PartiallyClips in his eight-year run, but to my knowledge he never wrote a strip that inspired a fundraiser for a zebra-tasting to determine if its meat is in marble sections.

This is my proudest moment as a creator, and I thank you all.

  18. MuleyBob

Don’t get me wrong people, I like the strip. It’s funny for sure.
I just always wanted to be the guy who points out a flaw or error that has nothing to do with the point. I see people doing that w/ such smug satisfaction and I have always wanted to be that a-hole.
So I thank you, Shoebox, for this chance to realize a dream.

PS I do feel smug about it. I really do. Awesome.

  19. Daniel

The animals they’re worrying about are actually leopards, but the zebras think they’re tigers because they’ve never seen a real tiger.

  20. Dan

Hahaha! One of my favorites so far!
