My first draft of this strip was two beat panels and a single caption in the third saying “Okay, seriously, I quit.”
I don’t remember how long I stared at this image when I first stumbled upon it. It was just sitting in my clip art collection – a collection I PAID for, mind you – like a legitimate and worthwhile image. I knew I had to do something with it just so I’d never have to look at it again. ”Chex republic” ultimately sprung to mind because consarnit I loves me some Chex mix, and I devised a series of puns to lead me to this point – though unfortunately none that explain the “N” on the timothy-chewing bespectacled maize-lord’s scarecrow crown. Suggestions on this are beyond welcome.
This strip is dedicated to filker Tom Smith, who could probably have squeezed nine or ten more puns out of this strip.

I’m currently winging my way to KeyCon in Winnipeg, where I’ll be performing this weekend as Worm Quartet!
In unrelated news, you might have noticed that the ads have recently changed on this site. The provider of said ads has a survey available which, if you have time, I’d greatly appreciate you filling out, as it’ll affect both what sort of ads are served here and how much Rob and I get for them. I asked Rob how I should go about subtly prodding you guys to take said survey, and he suggested I write a limerick. So here goes:
There once was a man from the Internets
Who wrote strips fueled by mock’ry and bitterness
If you think they don’t stink
Please click on this link
And feel free to Facebook and Twitter this.

There are many of us here on line
Who think that this site is just fine
I’ll do what you say
and take your survey
because payment is always divine..
By the way, I was amaized by the corny clip today.
I love this cereal clip art comic strip and your particular bran of humor.
The fact that most of the strips have a grain of truth that crops up gives it a sort of moral fiber that is worth returning to.
Real food for thought.
Nebraska Cornhuskers! Cheer on the large, North European bred, corn fed, football carrying, jean overhall wearing, Midwestern farm boys!
Kel is correct. Despite the attempts by mareketeers to change the name to “Huskers” they are now and always will be the Cornhuskers. Corn is king here and they wear hats just like that at athletic events.
my captcha code was pp4u. lol
I took your dagnabit survey. But only because of the limerick. Rob Balder, marketing genius.
Today’s strip: not even chuckle-worthy. But for the life of my I don’t know how you could have possible made it any better.
I took the survey … but it failed to ask the question,
“Do you want to see any more ads about teeth, ever?”
The answer is NO
PS No idea what a CHEX is – I assume it’s some American product we don’t have here – but that’s OK, the art you used here is so pathetic that anything you say makes it funnier.
I actually thought this one was quite good. Took the survey as well.
The cereal cartoon is killer! As long as you don’t cut against the grain…
Here’s a YouTube video about clipart:

Here’s the theme song to this strip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L-oMy_75Wg&feature=youtube_gdata
Damn. The comic here just really isn’t any good since the old guy left… I’m sorry, I gave you a chance, but I just don’t find you remotely funny.
*removes comic from ‘favourites’ list*
I have to concur that this clipart screams out Nebraska Cornhuskers so much that it can’t be an accident. I also have to concur with Weevil after a fashion that Mr. Balder’s wit was more pleasing to me, but I am still enjoying your work. I further ask Weevil to remember that you are taking over for someone who invented the medium, and of course, will not accomplish it in the same manner. Consider yourself still on MY favorites list!
N stands for “Niblets”, of course.
i was going to say [Dr. Pepper! sheesh] that the “N” is for “Nubbin” – you know, the OTHER name for corn kernals, and a logical name to use instead of “King” when discussing a Corn Kingdom…
that aside, *I* find you just as funny [but differently - and i have yet to NOT understand a strip] so i’m still here, and i took the survey.
“Joel was a much better host than Mike.”
Same argument, different series. *shrug* I’m still reading.
Definitely the N is for Nebraska. Glad to see there are so many other Cornhusker-aware folks here! As for Weevil, ah well. I liked Balder’s stuff a lot, but you’re coming along fine. You’re still on my favorites list, along with Get Fuzzy, Day By Day, Dilbert, and User Friendly. And I keep checking in periodically to see if Maxwell’s Demon has ever been updated, but no. It was genius, which is quite a compliment coming from a Christian. But back to this… The clipart medium is intriguing, I’m glad we have you to continue creating with it. I like your stuff, even though I didn’t expect to.
Maybe my mind is dirty, was I the only one who thought the last 2 lines were a reference to what the internet is for…? I mean because I’ve seen that web site >.>
Keep up the good work Shoe, the trolls always look for hate where there is none.
You know, it could be my longstanding grudge against Chex… but everytime I even think about this strip, I giggle.
Go Cornhuskers! I guess if you don’t live in Nebraska, you just don’t GET it.
I wonder what other school mascots you have in your clipart collection. Can you do Mizzou next?
Wow…so in one fell swoop I completely missed the Cornhuskers thing AND assumed Chex cereal was a universal concept. Apparently I expect everybody else to know a lot more about the U.S. than I do. Sorry ’bout that. For now, I’m totally going with “N is for Niblets.”
Skorpious – Dead on. I didn’t call too much attention to it, primarily because I just did a “For Porn” joke a little bit ago.
Ruthie – Consider it revenge for your bake sale ad entry, which does the same for me.
Thanks for the words, all!

The “N” is for Nowledge
