The connection with Bernie Madoff actually didn’t occur to me until I was lettering. ”Bernie” just seemed like the right name for a shifty stockbroker. Maybe that bubbled through my subconscious from the coverage of Madoff, but I think it was already in my head as kind of a cliché name for this profession. The fact that the world occasionally produces someone like this, a guy who swindled a lot of investors and has the perfect first name and a last name that is pronounced like “made off,” sometimes makes me suspect I’m in a novel, or something like the Truman Show.
