I had this line I put in and took out several times, at the end of the second panel.  He says, “You know what I’m saying?”

It changes the tone completely, to my mind.  Makes him definitely aware of the irony.  I just could not decide whether that was funnier than having him mainly (or alternately) interpretable as an obsessed actor.  In the end, without a strong enough case to keep the line, I went with streamlining and “ambiguity is also funny.”
