I really tried to work in a Mr. Ed/Horse Whisperer joke about how the equine version of this is more common, but there was not place to cram it in. It would be interesting to turn Mr. Ed into a brooding psychological drama, though. Not enough talking-animal-as-window-to-inner-voice material has been done.
