A few years back I remember reading an article in some popular science magazine somewhere exploring the question of why no animals ever evolved wheels. The difficulty in growing and replenishing something that is freely rotating on an axis was the main reason they gave for it being so difficult for an organism to grow a wheel. That makes sense, but I don’t see why an animal that lives on tundra wouldn’t grow skis, especially in front. Could make a cool alien in a story.
I was slightly tempted to steal a joke I heard on the annual A Prarie Home Companion joke show for this one: “When taking up cross country skiing, you should start with a small country.”
Glad I didn’t.
