According to my, as always, half-assed and shoddy Internet research, a “maktab” is an Islamic school for girls.  If I had said “madrassa” here, it would probably have rung a bell with more readers, but it wouldn’t have been correct.  I think I’m skating a thin enough cultural patch of ice with this one already that I’d better go with the correct terminology, lest I imply pederasty here too.
