Hmm… I think it crossed the line into political with the bit after “ha-ha, very poignant”, unless that was just the character. It just seems more like a statement than a punch line with that added, even if it was just the character.
@ JET73L: Nah, not really political. Land mines are little tiny Dresdens: they kill civilians, and not soldiers, making them a piss-poor combat weapon for both offensive and defensive maneuvers. (I suppose I could start flapping my arms and screeching like some hippy peacenik about how “killing people is just fine with you, huh, ya fascist bastard!” but I don’t think that was your point. My own point is land mines are a weapon of terror, not strategy.
Of course they don’t kill soldiers; soldiers know better than to move into a minefield. Mines are neither offensive nor defensive – nor, in fact, strategic. They’re tactical. Properly used, they deny an enemy (yes, and yourself) an area, channelling them into and through choke points of your choosing, enabling you to engage them at an advantage.
Properly used, they’re there to punish the enemy for choosing to do something you don’t want them to do – ‘cross that field, follow this road’ – and get them to do something you DO want them to do – ‘cross THIS field, follow THAT road’ – so that you can kill them less indiscriminately. And usually, this works.
I agree that most militaries don’t police (that means ‘pick up after themselves’) the mines they’ve laid down. But those who indiscriminately scatter mines or, say, IEDs aren’t responsible people in the first place, and generally intend to instill terror. And civilians, well, they don’t know enough to not play in minefields, so to speak. So yeah, they get killed or mutilated.
