To noneofyourbusiness,

As sandcastle pointed out, it takes BOTH parents to raise a penguin chick; one to sit on the chick to protect and feed it, while the other parent goes hunting at sea. The male and female switch places every few days. If one parent dies, the lone parent cannot protect and feed it's chick by itself.

One of the big misconceptions about penguins is that the male penguin does all the work alone. As shown in March of the Penguins, the Emperor penguins are unique amongst penguins in that the male incubates the egg by himself, while the female hunts at sea. BUT, once their chick hatches, it takes both parents to raise it. In EVERY other penguin species, however, the male AND the female take turns incubating their egg/s.

And to the artist - this cartoon is still snort, chuckle, guffaw worthy every time! Absolutely love it!

Cheers,
Dyan - The Penguin Lady

I worked with penguins for nine years at Boston's New England Aquarium, and raised nearly two-dozen penguin chicks. I have to tell you that this is my favorite penguin cartoon of all time. I still cannot read this without laughing out loud! It's absolutely brilliant.

New Zealand Journal of Zoology, via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin#Breeding:
"With the exception of the Emperor Penguin, all penguins share the incubation duties.[46] These incubation shifts can last days and even weeks as one member of the pair feeds at sea."

i'm a bubble burster... the males take care of the babies when they are in the egg and after they hatch. the mother doesn't return for quite a while with food.

Science ruins all jokes.
